Epping is an electorate in the northwest of Sydney, which is named after the largest suburb within it. Other suburbs within the electorate include Beecroft, Cheltenham, Pennant Hills, West Pennant Hills, North Epping, and parts of Thornleigh, Westleigh, Marsfield, Eastwood, Carlingford, and Cherrybrook. The electorate of Epping was created during the redistribution before the 1999 election in which the former electorate of Eastwood was abolished and the name was changed to reflect the electorate’s shift northwards. Prior to Greg Smith’s election as the Member of Parliament for Epping, Andrew Tink represented the electorate from 1988.
Since 1927, when the Eastwood electorate was first created, all Members of Parliament from the seat have been in the Liberal Party or its political predecessors. The Epping electorate is comprised of approximately 48,584 voters. Major local issues include the narrowing of Epping Road, lack of parking at Epping Station, the North West Rail Link, the traffic on Pennant Hills Road, and the closing of Epping footbridge.
