Greg Smith was elected as the Member for Epping on the 24th of March 2007 and soon after was appointed as the Liberal Party’s Shadow Attorney General and Shadow Minister for Justice and Shadow Minister for Juvenile Justice in the New South Wales Parliament. The Juvenile Justice shadow portfolio is now held by Anthony Roberts, Member for Lane Cove. Greg has been married to his wife Julianne for 33 years and they are the proud parents of Ben, Dominica, Nathaniel, Jerome and Philomena, as well as a Granddaughter, Teresa, the daughter of his eldest son Ben and his daughter-in-law Julianna.

Greg was born in 1947 and was the second eldest son of Ted and Noreen Smith. Greg grew up with his three siblings in Strathfield, Beverley Hills, Goulburn, Coogee and Maroubra Beach and was educated mainly at St. Joseph’s Primary school, North Goulburn and De La Salle College Coogee and Marcellin College Randwick before attending Sydney University. Growing up Greg showed himself to be a keen cricketer and keen Rugby League player, and supported Western Suburbs Magpies and now the Wests Tigers, as well as the Eastwood Rugby Union Club.

After graduating from Sydney University with an LLB he practised as a solicitor from admission in 1973 in several city firms and later at the Commonwealth Deputy Crown Solicitor’s Office, Sydney from 1975 to 1984, mainly in the Prosecutions Section, rising to the position of Principal Legal Officer.

In 1982 – 1983 Greg worked as an Instructing Solicitor to the Stewart Royal Commission into Drug Trafficking (otherwise known as the Mr Asia syndicate). Following this appointment Greg then became the Senior Assistant DPP when the Commonwealth DPP Office opened in Sydney in 1984 and held this post until 1985 when he was appointed the Senior Adviser (Legal) to the National Crime Authority in Sydney.

Greg was admitted to the Bar in 1987 and appointed a NSW Crown Prosecutor in the same year. From September 1992 to November 1993 Greg was seconded to ICAC as Counsel Assisting on the Operation Milloo investigation into police corruption. In 1998 Greg was appointed a Deputy Senior Crown Prosecutor.  He has prosecuted hundreds of criminal trials. He was appointed the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions in April of 2002, a post where Greg was to regularly appear in the High Court and other appellate courts as well as assisting in the management of the Office and the performance of the Director’s functions where delegated. Before leaving the DPP Greg was appointed a Senior Counsel on the 29th of September 2004.

Greg is a man of enduring faith and commitment and has been heavily involved in the life of the Catholic Church with his family serves on the Board of the Campion Institute at Toongabbie, and on the advisory board of the University of Notre Dame Law School. Since December 2005 Greg has served as the President of the St Thomas More Society, the guild of Catholic Lawyers, which celebrated its Diamond Jubilee in 2005. Greg was also formerly the President of NSW Right to Life.

Music has always been an important part of Greg’s life and he still continues to play in his own band, The Tokens, who have released two albums and now play mainly for senior citizens in the local area. Greg is a Cantor at St Gerard’s Church Carlingford and has been a member of the Bar choir since its inception in 1996.

Greg is the patron of the Epping RSL sub branch, the Epping Scout group and Epping Sharks Swimming Club. Greg is a member of the Beecroft Lions Club, The Epping Club, Epping Civic Trust and Beecroft/Cheltenham Civic Trust. Greg is also a member of the Bar Association and is a former member of the Bar Association’s Professional Conduct Committee and Criminal Law Committee.
