Granny Smith Festival Print E-mail

Greg Smith was delighted to be part of the official proceedings for the annual Granny Smith Festival in Eastwood held on Saturday October 15.

The festival celebrates the life of Maria "Granny" Smith who is famous for unintentionally growing the first granny smith apples in 1868. The festival began in 1985 and features street stalls, entertainment, rides, fireworks, the "Miss Eastwood" festival queen competition, and a grand parade through the streets of Eastwood.

Sadly, the festival took place this year without Edna Spurway – the last direct descendant of Granny Smith. Edna passed away earlier this year at the age of 101.

"I am pleased to be involved in such a great community event,’’ said Greg. “This is one of the largest annual events in the local area – and it just seems to get bigger every year."

"A festival like this could not be possible without the support of the community. Every year local businesses, organisations, and churches make a significant contribution to this event. It’s certainly appreciated by the thousands of people here.’’
